VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: DON MURRAY

Don Murray.jpeg

Don Murray's philosophy is to "give as much as you can". After retiring from his job at Texas Instruments, he knew he had to find a way to integrate that philosophy into his new daily routine.  When his wife mentioned Aberg Center for Literacy programs being offered to students through her job, his interest was peaked.  "I volunteered for Literacy Achieves previously and liked the idea of helping others better themselves." he says.

A short time later, Don began volunteering his time teaching English as well as Spanish classes at the Aberg Center.  It was an eye opening experience for him in the beginning.  "Becoming sensitive to various cultures and the students challenges to speak English and aggregate to the US was a little startling at first." recalled Don.  In his previous volunteer experience, he recalled having to teach alongside other teachers inside the classrooms and Don appreciated having more control of his classes at Aberg Center.  "They encourage you to do everything possible so your students will embrace the material and the teacher.  That can be hard if you and another colleague aren't on the same page."

Don has been with the Aberg Center for a few years and the staff call him "earnest" and "willing to work".  "I would tell anyone interested in volunteering or donating that you can help A LOT of people at once with this organization.  Our classes influence not only the students, but they take their new knowledge back to their families which is the goal of Aberg Center, multi generational learning."

We are grateful for volunteers like Don Murray who could spend their time doing so many other things but see the need and opportunity to impact the community around them through our literacy programs.  You can find Don Murray teaching our ESL Writing classes on Tuesdays as well as English classes on Wednesday nights! Thank you for your contributions Don!
